The Day Linear's Feed Was Mostly About Staff Engineers
No launches, no changelog, just a Linear engineer's throwaway line about staff engineering going mildly viral and a CPO wishing his notes app had an API. Elsewhere, Linear kept showing up as a supporting character in other people's agent demos.
What people were saying
Some days the conversation is about issues and cycles. Today it was about job titles.
The runaway post came from @dizaytsev, quote-tweeting a joke about staff engineers being expected to perform one miracle per year, and adding his own verdict: 20% more pay, 100% more expectations, worst position in engineering. Nearly 3,000 likes, which suggests he found a nerve. Nothing about Linear the product at all, but it was by a wide margin the most engaged-with thing anyone from the team posted.
The second team post was smaller and funnier. @jorilallo said he wished the notes app Muse had API access, adding that Notion is overkill for what he wants. That is a competitor drive-by delivered so casually it barely registers as one, though it did produce the day's best reply (see below).
Notable anecdotes
Everything else was Linear-as-plumbing in other people's demos. @aakashgupta wrote up a research agent wired into Pylon, Notion and Linear that found 19 support tickets about shared storage resizing and then found something better: the company had already half-built the feature, broken it, and forgotten. His framing is that the expensive failure mode is not slow research but repeated research, and it only surfaced because the agent read the issue tracker alongside the codebase.
@xkevin_le pitched a support-investigation agent that reproduces the bug, checks Stripe, confirms the root cause, then files the Linear issue or opens the PR. @victor_explore is distributing DESIGN.md files scraped from 2,000+ real design systems so Cursor and Claude Code stop guessing at UI, with Linear's own system included alongside Stripe and Notion. Linear as design reference material is a sort of compliment you cannot buy.
On the competitive side, @barbinbrad listed a self-hostable Jira/Linear alternative among his favorite bring-your-own-cloud tools, and @MadeWithSvelte highlighted Huly as an open-source alternative to Linear, Jira, Slack, Notion and Motion simultaneously, which is a lot of things to be an alternative to.
A quiet day, then. The product shipped nothing visible and mostly appeared in the background of other people's screenshots, which is arguably where infrastructure belongs.
